Well it has been a long time between drinks, hasn't it boys and girls? Lots to report back on. Some new images of work in the 'artwork' section. Locksmith has been taking up a lot of time lately. Exciting things happening there, let me tell you. Next year is going to be big. Check out the newly revamped Locksmith website
here.
In between running Locksmith and working day jobs, I've even had time to make some new work. I've got a little piece in a show at At the Vanishing Point at the moment. The show runs until November 2nd, more info
here. I'll put some pictures up on this site soon.
In August I also managed to get over to NYC to visit Rachel. I had an awesome time over there. Took lots of slides on my Nikon FM2, so it might be a while until I get a chance to scan some pics and put them up on here. Rachel was doing an internship at a very interesting artist studio complex called The Gowanus Studio Space. It's worth having a look at their website
here. Went to a Mets game, saw a lot of art, walked around a lot. The first two weeks I was there we stayed in an awesome apartment in SoHo, the last week we stayed in a suburb on the border of Brooklyn and Queens called Ridgewood. It reminded me of Auburn.
Also managed to get up to Brissie recently for a show that Rachel was in at
MSSR. This is an artist-run project space located in a Queenslander house in New Farm. Also visited another great artist-run space called
Boxcopy. The ARI community in Brisbane looks very healthy at the moment.

Keys Cut, opens on June 26, 6pm-8pm at Locksmith and features new work by myself and Samuel Villalobos. The show continues Thursday - Saturday, 1pm-6pm until July 12.

It has been a couple of months since I've written in here, and I've been bloody flat out. There are some very exciting things to announce, however. Firstly, Locksmith now has its own web site, located at
www.locksmithprojectspace.com
The next exhibition there is an installation work by Adam Costenoble, and it opens this coming Thursday, April 17, from 6pm-8pm. More details are on the Locksmith site.
I am currently preparing for two exhibitions I have coming up. The first opens on May 22nd at Chalk Horse, 56 Cooper St Surry Hills. Then, in June, I will be showing at Locksmith. I will update this site with more info in the lead up to both shows.
Wednesday 20/02/08
One day left until The Start of a Very Nice Day! opens. Listen out to Fbi Radio 94.5FM this afternoon at 4:30 to hear myself, Samuel Villalobos and Nigel Milsom interviewed by Alison Piotrowski.
Friday 08/02/08
Announcing the very first exhibition to be held at Locksmith (not including the fundraiser), The Start of a Very Nice Day! Curated by Nigel Milsom, and including work by Aimee Crouch, Liron Gilmore and Mary MacDougall. See you all on February 21st!

Space Habit at Locksmith last Sunday was a great success. It was the first event in the space since the fundraiser, and also since we put up the new walls. There was an incredibly positive atmosphere running throughout the whole night, and the performers put on a great show. Here are a few mp3 files of the bands performing on the night.
Thanks to James and Kenzie for the following photos.

I can now let you know that the first event to be happening at Locksmith in 2008 will take place on Sunday, January 13. Jonathan Hochman is organising a musical performance night, with four bands on the bill. I'll let you know more details as soon as I have them, it's going to be a great night!

It has been a long time coming, but I have finally added some more images to the artwork section of this site, some older work, as well as some new drawings and a painting from this year.
I've also put up some images from the Locksmith fundraiser, and work that we have been doing on the space since then.

Wow. The Locksmith fundraiser was incredible. We had such a fun day, and it was extremely successful. The response to the space was amazing, and I am so excited by the prospect of improving the space and beginning our program of exhibitions, screenings and performances.
I will put some photos of the fundraiser up on this site in the next couple of days.

The line-up for the Locksmith Fundraiser is finally confirmed. Check out the flyer below for all the details. I hope you like the design, we were going for a small business letter box drop leaflet aesthetic.

Wednesday 07/11/07
Plans for the Locksmith fundraiser on Sunday November 25 are going really well. So far we have confirmed eight artists to donate work for the art auction, and we've also got a great line-up of performances on the day.
I'll announce the names of everybody involved in the next few days.

I'm now back in Old Sydney Town, straddling the boundary between Alexandria and Redfern. I've seen the best that Europe, Asia and North America have to offer, and I'm happy to be home. Time to knuckle down and make some art.
So far so good. I've got an excellent studio set up in my house, I'm living with a great mate, and we're starting up our own project space, called Locksmith (be sure to watch this space, and pencil Sunday November 25 into your diaries for an introductory BBQ at our place).
I'm currently working on some paintings, drawings, sculpture, photography, and video. I truly haven't felt this productive since art school.
I'll get some shots of what I'm working on up here shortly for anyone interested.
One thing about being overseas for roughly one year out of the last two, I feel an overwhelming desire to make art directly addressing Sydney and Australia, and more specifically the place in which I grew up, Blacktown. I'll keep you posted.
This is old news
My art practice operates within a system of expression that is familiar to anyone who is versed in the language of consumerism. This is reflected in the materials that I work with. They are usually sourced from a domestic situation, and, are comprised of quotidian, mass-produced, utilitarian objects. These items are experienced as part of our everyday lives, and as such they are usually ignored or regarded as commonplace.
I interact with these objects, forming conceptual and physical connections between objects and ideas. I often use a process of repetition or reduction, the one occasionally leading to the other, and I present what happens to the objects when their intended function is subverted, inverted, or taken to its extreme. In the case of the latter, sometimes all that remains to be revealed is a remnant of the object’s function, or a feature of its function that is normally overlooked. The resulting artworks signal a reconfiguration in the way these objects are perceived. By focussing on an aspect of their functionality that is normally unnoticed, either because of its apparent ordinariness, or, as a result of its ephemeral quality, these banal objects are transformed.
Their original purpose and form are still recognisable, but their transmutation suggests a leap into the inconceivable and imperceptible. The objects are re-presented in a way that challenges our original understanding of them, and they are imbued with a sense of wonder. It is through this transformation that the objects also form an identity that is unique, in contrast to the mass-produced cohort from which they originated.
